What Are Senescent Cells?

Cellular senescence is a state in which cells permanently stop dividing but do not die. Senescent cells accumulate with age and in response to stress, DNA damage, and oncogene activation. While senescence serves protective functions (tumor suppression, wound healing), the chronic accumulation of senescent cells drives a pro-inflammatory state known as the Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype (SASP).nnSASP involves the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and proteases that damage surrounding tissue and promote a chronic low-grade inflammatory state associated with many age-related conditions.

FoxO4 and Senescent Cell Survival

Senescent cells resist apoptosis (programmed cell death) through several survival mechanisms. Research has identified that the transcription factor FoxO4 plays a key role in maintaining senescent cell survival by interacting with p53 to suppress apoptotic signaling.nnFoxO4-DRI is a D-amino acid retro-inverso peptide u2014 a modified form of a FoxO4 sequence that is resistant to proteolytic degradation.
